Women's Golf Competes in Anderson-Erskine Fall Kickoff at The Links at Stoney Point

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Junior Haylie George fired a career-low 74 on Tuesday to help the Coker University women's golf team finish 15th in the inaugural Meredith Insurance Anderson-Erskine Kickoff.

Playing on the Links at Stoney Point, George bogeyed her first hole, the 17th, but then birdied three holes on the front nine en route to a 1-under 35.  She hit 11-of-14 fairways and 10 greens and needed just 29 putts. Her rounds of 83, 79 and 74 gave her a total of 236 (+20) which was the best of her career and tied for 44th place in the 17-team field.

After a difficult first round that led to a 339 team score for the Cobras, who had to participate with just four players due to an injury, Coker rebounded nicely with rounds of 315 and 319 for a 973 total.

Senior Mack Taylor Bailey carded rounds of 81-74-82--237 for the Cobras. In the second round, Bailey hit 10 fairways and 10 greens and had 29 putts.

Junior Kelly Campman had a steady tournament for the Cobras, posting rounds of 83, 81 and 85 (249), which was her career-best 54-hole total. Freshman Gisele Morna, who was making her collegiate debut, was admittedly nervous in her first round and shot 92, but fired 81 and 78 in the final two rounds for a 251 total.

Anderson University won the event with a score of 872, just 8-over par for three rounds.

"It's always tough playing a college tournament with four players because you don't have a drop score in each round," Coker head coach John Hackney said. "After a tough first 18 on Monday, our players really settled in and shot some solid scores, so me and assistant coach Dan Schmotzer were very proud of how our group responded. When the greats in sport face adversity, they usually recover very quickly and put the mistakes out of their minds, and our ladies were able to do that.
"There are so many positives to take away from our first event of the 2023-24 season. First, our ladies were very supportive of each other and had fun, which are points of emphasis this season. Secondly, Haylie and Kelly had their best overall tournament performances, so that's awesome. Mack put up a very nice second-round score and was a superb leader on and off the course. Gisele showed in the last two rounds that she can be a force in this region for years to come.

"We should have a full lineup for our next event, so we can't wait to see what other records these Lady Cobras are going to set this year!"
