Coker Shuts Down Carson-Newman in Final Minute

Jefferson City, TN - The Coker University Women's Basketball Team claimed a one point victory over Carson-Newman in the final seconds of their game on Saturday (Feb. 25).

Starting off the first quarter hot, Mya Wasswa and Dominique Rodriguez combined for 14 of the 26 points. The Cobras continued to lead throughout the first quarter and finished it out leading by seven points. Coker's lead continued into the second quarter, this time Valicia Demeritte claiming 10 of the 20 points scored in the second quarter. The Cobras and Eagles went head to head for the rest of the game, Carson Newman with a big push in the fourth quarter, bringing the game within one point. Kristynn Knight finally put the game to rest with two seconds left in the fourth quarter, a layup to put the Cobras up 80-79. 

Leading the Cobras, Mya Wasswa put up 18 points for the night and was followed on the leaderboard by Valicia Demeritte with 15 of her own. Dominique Rodriguez registered 10 points throughout the game, Dasia Lambert and Diamond Jackson hot on her heels with nine points. Three Cobras collected the remaining 11 points, bringing the total to 80 points. As a team, Coker shot 53.8 percent from the field, 61.5 percent from the three-point range, and 84.2 percent from the free-throw line. 

Haley McClure, Abigail Keesling, Dasia Lambert, Diamond Jackson, and Dominique Rodriguez individually had three rebounds throughout the game. With seven assists, Dasia Lambert continued to make plays and find perfect passes for her team. Once again Mya Wasswa and Abigail Keesling trailed just behind with a combined seven assists. Of the nine steals, Dasia Lambert took four of those in to her own hands. 

This was Coker's final game of the 2022-23 season and they will be returning to the court in the fall for their 2023-24 season.
