Coker Claims Second Win of Pre-Season Conference Challenge

Wingate, N.C. - The Coker Women's Basketball Team (2-0) earned their second victory of the season over Francis Marion on Saturday (Nov. 12th) by a score of 68-62.

The Cobras, much like the UNC Pembroke match-up, started off the game neck and neck. The first quarter was a battle to gain control and although Coker came up short, they were only down by one point. Coker continued to battle through the second quarter, looking for any opening to seize the lead. The Cobras would go into half-time trailing by two, with a score of 32-30.

Both teams continued to apply offensive and defensive pressure for the entirety of the third quarter, the Cobras dropping twenty-two points to Francis Marion's twenty-one. Coker was able to strecth its lead in the fourth quarter, out-scoring the Patriots by seven points. With a total of twelve lead chnages throughout the game, Coker held the lead for the final five minutes. Francis Marion continued to push for points until the last minute, but they were unable to overcome strong defensive plays put up by the Cobras. 

The Cobras shot 31.9 percent from the field, not including the 28.6 percent from past the three point line. Abigail Keesling once again led the team in points with seventeen of her own, nine of those points being made up of three pointers. Valicia Demeritte (15) also scored in double digits for the game while seven others posted points throughout the game. The Cobras out-rebounded the Patriots 50-44, Valicia Demeritte collecting thirteen out of the fifty. Nine other players were  also active off the backboard with the remaining thirty-seven rebounds. Valicia Demeritte, Abigail Keesling, and Mya Wasswa all posted two assists individually while Dasia Lambert (1), Dominique Rodriguez (1), Diamond Jackson (1), Kristynn Knight (1), Malayziah Etheredge (1), and Ashauntee Nelson (1) added to the assists total. Dasia Lambert and Malayziah Etheredge led the team with two steals apiece. The four blocks throughout the game were brought in by Dasia Lambert, Haley McClure, Diamond Jackson, and Ashauntee Nelson

The Cobras will return to the court on Thursday (Nov. 17th) against the Barton Bulldogs. The game will take place in Wilson, N.C. at 5:00 PM. Live stats and streaming will be available at www.cokercobras.com
