Cobras Open Conference Play with Victory over Mars Hill on Saturday

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Coker University Women's Basketball opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 67-53 over Mars Hill on Saturday (Nov. 20).

The Cobras led just 9-8 through six minutes of play, before going ahead 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cobras opened up a multi-possession lead through the first few minutes of the second, before Mars Hill would get back within three as the half ended with Coker leading 23-20.

The Cobras opened the second half on an 11-0 run to go ahead by double-digits, holding that lead until the final minute of the third. Coker led 46-39 after three quarters.

The Cobras opened up another double-digit lead early in the fourth, leading by 10 halfway through the quarter. Coker was able to keep Mars Hill at a few possessions' distance until the final horn to seal the home victory.

Coker shot 50 percent in the game, including five three-pointers. Saquita Joyner paced the Cobras with a game-high 17 points, while Hope Richardson, Abigail Keesling and Ahlea Myers each chipped in six points. Five other Cobras contributed points in the victory. Joyner also led the Cobras on the boards with eight rebounds, while nine others were also active in the rebounding effort. Mariah Mitchem, Keesling and Myers each dished out a team-high four assists in the game, while Ashauntee Nelson also helped on one Coker bucket in the game. Joyner, Keesling and Mya Wasswa each registered one steal in the game, while Richardson posted Coker's lone block in the victory.

The Cobras (2-1, 1-0 SAC) return to the hardwood on Tuesday (Nov. 23) to host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the DeLoach Center, with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
