Cobras Cruise Past Francis Marion for Saturday Non-Conference Win

PEMBROKE, N.C. - Coker University women's basketball picked up its first win of the season in convincing fashion on Saturday (Nov. 13) with an 89-67 win over Francis Marion.

Coker jumped out to a 16-2 lead halfway through the first quarter, holding FMU to single digits on the scoreboard for the first eight minutes. Coker went on to double up FMU with under two minutes in the quarter, taking a 29-14 lead to the second.

Coker stretched its lead to 20 in the first minute and a half of the second quarter, before the lead would fluctuate over the course of the quarter. Coker would take a 46-26 lead to the half.

The Cobras increased the lead in the second half up until the final horn for the victory. Coker never trailed in the game.

Coker shot 51.3 percent from the field in the game, including 50 percent from beyond the arc (8-16). Saquita Joyner finished with a game-high 21 points, just one shy of her career high to lead the Cobras. Valicia Demeritte (14 points) and Mariah Mitchem (10 points) also scored in double figures, while nine others also contributed points in the victory. Coker out-worked FMU 52-39 on the glass, led by a game-high 10 boards from Joyner to complete the double-double while 11 others were active on the glass for Coker. Ahlea Myers paced the Cobras with four assists in the game, while Joyner, Abigail Keesling and Raya Coley each helped on two Coker buckets in the game. Six others registered one assist apiece in the game for the Cobras. Myers also led the team with two steals, while five others recorded one steal apiece. Hope Richardson and Haley McClure each posted one block for the Cobras in the win.

The Cobras (1-1) return to the hardwood on Saturday (Nov. 20) to welcome Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference action. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from the DeLoach Center, with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
