Cobras Take Down Lions in Saturday Conference Victory

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team took down Mars Hill in a South Atlantic Conference victory on Saturday (Feb. 13) by a score of 78-70.

The Cobras maintained a lead through the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, before Mars Hill grabbed the lead at 16-15 with three minutes left. After the teams played to a 16-16 tie, Mars Hill went on a run to take a 26-18 lead in the final minute of the quarter. The Lions led 26-18 after 10 minutes.

The Cobras rallied to play to a 27-27 tie through three and a half minutes, before Coker would take a five-point lead with under five minutes to play. The teams played to a 33-33 tie with under three minutes to play in the half, before the Lions would go on a run to take a five-point lead with one minute to play in the half. The Lions took a 41-33 lead to the half.

The Cobras would get back within five with under six minutes to play in the third quarter, before the Cobras would get back within three with three minutes to play in the frame. Coker would re-gain the lead with a minute and a half, before the Lions would tie the game at 58 with 39 seconds to play in the quarter. The teams would go to the final 10 minutes tied at 60.

The teams played to a 66-66 tie with five minutes left, before playing to a tie at 68 with four minutes to play. The Cobras would surge ahead for a four-point lead with a little over a minute to play, before icing the victory from the free throw line.

Emily Davis paced the Cobras with a game-high 17 points, while Raya Coley added 12 points and Je'Nya Wilder chipped in 11 points. Six other Cobras scored in the game. Coker out-rebounded Mars Hill 40-36, led by nine boards from Haley McClure. Seven other Cobras were active on the glass in the victory. Ahlea Myers dished out a team-high six assists in the game, while Coley added five helpers. Five other Cobras helped on Coker buckets in the game. Abigail Keesling paced the Cobras with four steals, while Ashauntee Nelson also had three and three others also recorded steals in the game. Hope Richardson posted two blocks, while Valicia Demeritte and and McClure each had one.

The Cobras return to action on Monday (Feb. 15) to host Carson-Newman in a South Atlantic Conference matinee. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from the DeLoach Center, with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
