Women's Basketball Falls to UVA Wise on Saturday

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team fell to UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday (Jan. 9) by a score of 87-70.

The teams played to an 8-8 tie through five and a half minutes, before UVA Wise would go on a run to take a 15-8 lead into the final two minutes of the first quarter. The Cobras would close the deficit toward the end of the quarter, as UVA Wise led 17-15 after 10 minutes. 

The Cavaliers expanded their lead early in the second, before stretching their lead into double digits halfway through the frame. UVA Wise would keep the Cobras at a distance for the remainder of the first half, taking a 43-30 lead to the break.

UVA Wise would maintain its double-digit lead throughout the second half, taking the road conference victory.

The Cobras shot 31 percent in the game, aided by four three-pointers. Ahlea Myers and Saquita Joyner each poured in a team-high 18 points, while seven others scored in the game. Coker out-rebounded UVA Wise 53-48 in the game, led by a game and career-high 14 boards from Joyner to complete the double-double. Seven other Cobras were active on the glass. Myers and Abigail Keesling each dished out two assists in the game, while three others helped on Cobra buckets. Emily Davis recorded two steals, while four others each had one. Joyner posted three blocks in the game, while Hope Richardson had two and Haley McClure also recorded one.

The Cobras return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 13) when they travel to Wingate for an evening SAC tilt. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
