Cobras Win Second Straight, Take Down Limestone Wednesday Night

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team won its second straight game in an 83-78 victory over Limestone Wednesday night (Jan. 6).

Coker took an 11-5 lead halfway through the first quarter, before Limestone would knot the game with just over four minutes to play in the quarter. The Cobras would take a 17-14 lead into the final two minutes of the frame, before the Saints would take back the 20-19 lead to end the quarter.

The teams battled to a 27-27 tie through the first four minutes of the second quarter, before the Saints would go on a run to take an eight-point lead with four minutes left in the first half. The Cobras would inch closer as the half neared the end, trailing the Saints 37-36 at the break. 

The teams played to a 42-42 deadlock through two minutes of the third quarter, before the Saints would build a five-point lead at the halfway point of the frame. Limestone would extend its lead into double-digits, before taking a 62-53 lead to the fourth.

 While holding the Saints scoreless, the Cobras stormed back to tie the game at 62 five minutes through the final frame. Three-pointers from Emily Davis and Abigail Keesling left the Cobras ahead 68-64 just past the halfway point of the frame, before the Saints would tie the game at 68 with four minutes to play. Coker and Limestone would continue to battle to a 75-75 draw with 1:15 to play, before the Cobras would be able to power their way to victory from the free throw line.

The Cobras shot 39.4 percent in the game, aided by 10 three-pointers. Ahlea Myers led the Cobras with a team-high 21 points, while Hope Richardson and Ashauntee Nelson each added 12. Davis also chipped in 10 points, while five others also scored in the game. Davis completed the double-double effort with a team-high 11 rebounds, while Saquita Joyner also grabbed 11 boards in the contest. Seven other Cobras were active on the glass in the victory. Myers paced the Cobras with a career-high eight assists in the game, while four others helped on Cobra buckets in the win. Myers also led the Cobras with four steals in the game, while three others recorded steals in the win. Richardson recorded the only two blocks in the game for the Cobras.

The Cobras return to the hardwood on Saturday (Jan. 9) against UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference action. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from the DeLoach Center, with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
