Women's Basketball Falls to Catawba on Monday in Conference Action

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team fell to Catawba on Monday (Dec. 14) in South Atlantic Conference action by a score of 74-60.

The Cobras jumped out to a 9-3 lead through three and a half minutes, before keeping the Indians at a five-point distance for the next few minutes. Catawba got back within one possession with under two minutes to play in the frame, before the Cobras stretched the lead to nine and led 19-10 after one quarter.

The Cobras extended their lead into double digits in the first minute and a half of the second, eventually doubling up the Indians at 32-16 four minutes in. The Cobras continued to roll through the second quarter, stretching their lead to 20 with a Valicia Demeritte three-pointer with three minutes to play in the half. The Cobras would cruise to the half with a 39-22 lead.

 The Cobras carried their 17-point lead past the midway point of the third, before Catawba would begin to chip away and get within 11 with two and a half minutes to play in the quarter. The Cobras would get the final points of the quarter to take a 52-38 lead to the fourth.

The Indians would storm back in the fourth quarter, holding the Cobras to eight points in the frame and coming all the way back to take the lead with three and a half minutes to play. The Indians would seize control from there to take the victory.

The Cobras shot 40.8 percent (20-49) in the game, adding four three-pointers and also 16 free throws. Four Cobras scored in double figures, led by a career-high 11 points from Je'Nya Wilder. Emily Davis, Abigail Keesling and Hope Richardson each added 10 points, while five other Cobras contributed in the scoring column. Saquita Joyner pulled down a team-high eight boards, while eight other Cobras were active on the glass in the game. Ahlea Myers dished out a team-high four assists in the game, while four others helped on Cobra buckets in the game. Ashauntee Nelson posted a team-high four steals in the game, while Davis, Demeritte and Haley McClure each recorded one steal. Richardson and McClure each posted blocks for Coker in the game.

The Cobras return to action tomorrow (Tuesday, Dec. 15) to travel to Converse for a non-conference matinee. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. from Spartanburg, S.C. with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
