Women's Basketball Drops Saturday Conference Tilt with Carson-Newman

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team dropped its South Atlantic Conference tilt with visiting Carson-Newman on Saturday (Feb. 8) by a score of 63-44.

Coker started out strong in the first quarter, building a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes. The teams played to an early 6-6 tie, before the Cobras took a 10-9 lead with four minutes to play on a Saquita Joyner layup. The Cobras would build their lead to four points, before later going ahead by five toward the end of the quarter.

Carson-Newman would rally to take control of the game in the second quarter, holding Coker to just three points in the frame. The Eagles came out and tied the game at 17 in the first two minutes of the quarter, before taking a 19-18 lead just under three minutes into the period. Carso-Newman would later build a seven-point lead in the quarter, before stretching their lead to nine in the final minute to ead to the half up 29-20.

The third quarter was a low-scoring affair in itself, with Carson-Newman winning the frame 11-7. The Eagles extended their lead into double-digits in the opening minute of the third quarter, before the Cobras got back within single digits two minutes into the quarter. The Eagles would build their lead back into double-digits, before a Hope Richardson layup got the Cobras back within eight with a minute and a half to play in the frame. Carson-Newman would re-gain its double-digit lead and carry it into the fourth quarter.

The Cobras would get back within 10 two minutes into the quarter, before the Eagles would further extend their double-digit lead. Carson-Newman would go on to the road victory from there.

Joyner led the Cobras in the scoring department with 10 points, while nine other Cobras contributed points in the game. Erin Houser paced the Cobras with a game-high 13 rebounds, while 10 other Cobras were active on the glass in the game. Janell Horton led the Cobras with three assists, while four others helped on Cobra buckets in the game. Four different Cobras registered steals in the game, while Emily Davis posted two blocks in the game for the Cobras. Houser, Horton and Amanda Cherry also recorded blocks in the game for Coker.

The Cobras return to the hardwood on Wednesday (Feb. 12) at Catawba for a South Atlantic Conference contest. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
