HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Henna Koponen set the Coker women’s basketball career scoring mark in her final game at Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium on Wednesday night with a 20 effort in a 101-76 loss to the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons. Koponen entered the game needing just five points to break the previous mark and with her performance tonight the new record is 1,475 points. Koponen still has one more game left to play before her college career comes to an end, so that number could still rise.

With the win Pfeiffer improves to 13-13 overall, 13-8 inside league play. The Lady Cobras dip their record to 3-23, 2-19.

Coker held the early advantage as Koponen (Vantaa, Finalnd) scored four-straight points for the Lady Cobras giving them a slim 9-7 lead three minutes into the contest. Christina Harvey started a quick 6-0 run for the Lady Falcons as Kellie Rhoney’s triple put the visitors up 15-11 just over two minutes later. From that point on, Pfeiffer would hold the lead for the remaining of the night.

Shelley Reese went on to hit two of the Lady Falcons 14 three-pointers sending Pfeiffer to a dozen point lead just before the halfway mark of the first. A Megan Thomas (Cresskill, N.J.) steal and layup brought Coker to within eight, but another 10-2 run by the Lady Falcons, capped off by another Reese three, put Pfeiffer up 16 with 8:37 until the break. Caudill then hit on four of her nine three-pointers to end the half with a 52-40 lead in favor of Pfeiffer.

Three minutes into the second half, Coker had sliced the Pfeiffer lead down to seven on another field goal made by Thomas. Again, a 14-2 run by the Lady Falcons separated the two teams on the scoreboard thanks to two more Caudill threes.

Reese hit on another jumper with 8:01 to play putting Pfeiffer up 20, 76-56. Caudill made it a 25-point lead with yet another three at the 5:50 point of the second before bumping it to 28 with her final long-range shot with 4:33 remaining. Reese pushed the Lady Falcons onto the 100-point plateau scoring five of the last six points as time expired.

The Lady Cobras were paced by Kopenen’s 20 points and seven rebounds, while fellow senior Heidi Rienstra (Brockville, Ontario) had 11 points and five rebounds. All five of the Coker seniors scored in their final home game; Kiesha Beavers (Williamstown, N.J.) and Lotta Aaltonen (Rauma, Finland) each had nine points and AG Stanciauskaite (Silute, Lithuania) had four points for the Lady Cobras.

Both teams will wrap up the 2009-2010 Conference Carolinas schedule on the road this Saturday, February 27th. Coker travels to Barton while Pfeiffer heads to Anderson. Both games tip at 5:30 p.m.
