With 12:50 left in the game the Flying Fleet lead by a commanding 18 points, but Coker began to make a comeback. On the back of India Elliot, the Lady Cobras scored 11 unanswered points and cut the Erskine lead to seven with 7:45 remaining. Erskine would not be put down as they came back strong and brought their lead back to 15 with 4:40 left in the game. Coker wouldn’t stay down for long, as they again stormed back with a 13-0 run that brought them to within two. After a few back and forth points Coker would tie the game at 49-49 with only 18 seconds left in regulation.
The Lady Cobras got things going early in the overtime period, as a Tara Nelson hit an early three pointer followed by a Jessica Hayes lay-up, giving Coker a five point advantage. Erskine’s Anita Owens would help bring the Fleet to within one, as she sank two foul shots and assisted on a Kristy Vaughn field goal, but that is as close as Erskine would get. Jessica Hayes would make three of four foul shots in the final thirty seconds to secure the victory for the Cobras.
Coker’s Tara Nelson/Rochester Hills, MI, lead the offensive attack with 15 points, shooting 4-7 from beyond the arc, while both India Elliott/Fasion, NC, and Jessica Hayes/Beaufort, SC, added 13 points to the Cobra’s scoring. Senior Rachel Kolbeck/Santa Paula, CA, finished with 10 points and eight rebounds as well for Coker.
As for Erskine, Anita Owens/Walhalla, SC, was 7-12 from three point range and finished with 23 points and six rebounds. Kristy Vaughn/Yadkinville, NC, was the other high scorer for the Fleet adding in 16 points and seven rebounds.
With the win Coker improves to 4-10 on the year, and 3-6 in the CVAC, while Erskine falls to 6-8 overall, and 3-5 in the CVAC.
