CONWAY, SC - The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (4-7) had its highest scoring output of the season as the Lady Chanticleers cruised to a 79-41 victory over Coker College (3-5) Jan. 5, in Conway, S.C. Coastal had four players in double figures, led by a career high 26 points from junior Kim Turner.

Coastal jumped out on the Cobras early, as the Lady Chants built an 11-1 lead in the first 3:21, capped off by a Turner layup. The lead was out to 20-7 on a fast break bucket from Turner and Coastal extended it to 19 points at 9:02 on a three-pointer from junior Jasmine Tyler. Coastal had its largest lead of the half on a buzzer-beating three from sophomore Alisha Dill, giving CCU a 43-18 lead.

Coastal was on fire in the first half, shooting 17-of-30 for 56.7 percent. Turner was 7-of-9 and had 16 points, while Tyler added 10. Coastal had 14 assists in the first half, led by senior Lucia Popovici’s five. Coker’s Shamae Hemingway had seven points for the Cobras.

Coastal was just as hot in the second half, shooting 56.5 percent. The lead was at 31 on a three from junior Amber Rose. Coker got the lead down to 26 at 52-26 on two Hemingway free throws at 13:00, but it was up to 35 at 9:06 on a Turner layup. Coastal had a lead of as high as 41 on two separate occasions. The 38-point margin of victory was the largest by the Lady Chants since a 119-66 win over Southern Virginia Feb. 26, 2003.

Turner was 10-of-12 from the field and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. She also had four steals. Tyler ended the game with 14 points and four steals. Dill, who tied a career high, and Rose had 12 points apiece. Rose also had four three-pointers for the second consecutive game.

Coastal shot 56.6 percent on the night, which is a season high and the first time the Lady Chants shot over 50 percent this season. Coastal also limited the Cobras to just 31.5 percent from the field.

Coastal had 20 assists on the night, as Popovici and Rose had five apiece. Coastal also outrebounded Coker 39-29, as Turner and Popovici had six boards apiece.

For Coker, Hemingway, a Conway native, led the team with 17 points and six rebounds. She also had five steals.

Coker returns to action January 6, at Limestone with a 5:30 PM start time.
