HARTSVILLE, SC — Coker upset seventh seeded Lees-McRae College 62-58 Monday night in the first round of the CVAC women’s basketball tournament.  CC improves to 9-19 on the year while Lees-McRae completes their season with a record of 12-16.

The Bobcats out-rebounded Coker 42-39 and had fewer turnovers but the Cobras used solid defense and good shooting to pull off the upset in the North Carolina Mountains.  CC shot 43 percent from the field and limited Lees-McRae to 35 percent shooting.

Senior Shamae Hemingway paced Coker with 14 points and 14 rebounds, her seventh double-double of the season.  With at least one-more game to play Hemingway needs only three rebounds to set a new career record at Coker for rebounds, only a week after establishing a new mark for points scored.

Sophomore India Elliott added 13 points, four assists and three steals, and Sarah Nelson contributed 12 points.  Deanna Lady did everything she could to help LMC win the game with 26 points and 18 rebounds, but it wasn’t quite enough.

The Cobras will now travel to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday night, March 2, for a 7:00 PM start against the Crusaders.
