Coker Adds Former NCAA All-American Turner to Track & Field Coaching Staff

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College head men's and women's track & field coach Benny Morgan announced the addition of assistant coach Elbert Turner. 

Collegiately, Turner played football and ran track and field at the University of Illinois. As a member of the Fighting Illini track and field team, he was a three-time All-American selection, one honor coming in the indoor season, the other two coming in outdoors. He also won a Big Ten Title in the 110-meter hurdles and the 55-meter high hurdles in 1990, running a time of 13.68 in the 110 and a time of 7.20 in the 55.

Turner was drafted in the seventh round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. He spent three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals (1992-1994). He continued his playing career in the Canadian Football League, playing the BC Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders until 1996.

Prior to his collegiate and professional career, Turner was a standout member of the track and field team at Roosevelt High School along with Morgan. He was a member of four team state titles, along with three individual state titles in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter low hurdles.

He was inducted into the Indiana Association Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame on Jan. 27, 2012.

Elbert is married to his wife Barbara. He has three children, Shaumia, Elbert IV and MiKayla.
