Softball Drops Slugfest to Mount Olive

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker University softball team dropped its doubleheader to the University of Mount Olive today (Feb. 16)  by scores of 13-10 and 3-0. As a team the Cobras cranked out 17 hits and launched three home runs. 

 

Game One

 

The Trojans would strike first, scoring two runs in the top of the first. 

Kayla Oswell would help the Cobras take the lead in the bottom of the first when she would launch a home run over the left center wall scoring Ariana Fair's double and Chloe Pelham's walk, 3-2. 

Mount Olive would regain the lead in the second inning and add some insurance in the fourth from a few hits and a grand slam to give them a 10-3 lead. 

 

In the bottom of the fourth, Brooklyn Stueness would score on a Trojan wild pitch, 10-4. 

Makayla Cuthbertson would draw the walk on a wild pitch that scored Ava Jay's infield single, 10-5. 

The Cobras would continue to cut into the Mount Olive lead when Chloe Pelham infield single would score Ariana Fair to bring Coker within four. 

In the bottom of the fifth Bailey Douglas would send a leadoff home run over the left center wall to put Coker right back in the game. 

With runners on first and second, Pelham would launch the game tying home run well over the left center wall to score Jay and Cuthbertson to bring the game to 10-10. 

Mount Olive would score the game winning runs in sixth as the Cobras fell 13-10 in game one. 

Isabelle Mullen and Jordyn Goodman would team up to strike out a combined eight batters over five innings pitched. 

 

Game Two

 

The Trojans would take their momentum into game two where they would score two runs in the first. 

Strong pitching by freshman Callie Thornton and solid defense by the Cobras would not allow Mount Olive to score again until the seventh when they would score on a sacrifice fly to bring the final game score to 3-0. 

 

Thornton threw a complete game for the Cobras, striking out four while only walking four and allowing seven hits. 

From the plate, Chloe Pelham went four for eight with a home run and a triple to go along with four RBI's. Kayla Oswell went three of six with a home run and three RBI's on the day. 

 

Coker is back in action this week when they play host in the Coker Round Robin Softball Tournament, where they will face Flager at 12:00 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 18), with live coverage at www.cokercobras.com
