Coker Softball Upsets No. 4 Lincoln Memorial in Doubleheader on Saturday

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker University softball team upset No. 4 Lincoln Memorial in its conference doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 27). The Cobras swept game one 4-3, and took game two 6-4.

Game One

The game was scoreless through two innings. The Cobras would take the lead in the third inning as Chloe Pelham hit a sacrifice fly to score Jessica McWhorter. Lincoln Memorial tied the game at 1-1 two innings later, before Pelham doubled to right center to score McWhorter again and give Coker a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Coker added to the lead in the sixth on a homer by Bailey Douglas that scored Jena Dewalt to score and give the Cobras a 4-1 lead. The Railsplitters would tally two runs with two outs in the seventh, before the Cobras would hang on for the game one victory. 

Pelham, Douglas and Ava Jay each had two hits in the game, while Makayla Cuthbertson, Goodwin and McWhorter each had one hit. McWhorter scored twice, while Dewalt and Douglas each scored once. Pelham and Douglas each drove in two runs. Isabelle Mullen (1-0) picked up the victory in the circle, scattering four hits over five innings allowing one earned run. She also struck out four in the outing. Hannah Fisher earned her first save of the season, allowing two runs on four hits through two innings of relief. 

Game Two

The game was scoreless through two innings, before Coker erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third. McWhorter's RBI single up the middle scored Jay, before an infield single by Scott would score Madison King. Pelham would deliver a big blow with a two-run single that scored Scott and McWhorter. After a solo shot got the Railsplitters on the board, the Cobras increased their lead with a Goodwin solo homer and a RBI single from Scott. LMU would get back within two through the fifth and sixth innings, but Coker was able to hang on to get the doubleheader sweep. 

Jay posted a team-high three hits in the game, while Scott, Pelham and McWhorter each registered two hits. Goodwin also recorded one hit in the game. Jay scored twice, while Scott, Goodwin, King and McWhorter each scored once. Scott and Pelham each drove in two runs, while Goodwin and McWhorter each drove in one. Jordyn Goodman (5-1) earned the victory in the circle, tossing five innings and scattering eight hits allowing two runs (one earned). Mullen picked up her first save of the season, firing a clean inning in relief. 

The Cobras hit the road on Wednesday (Mar. 31) for a conference doubleheader at Queens (N.C.). First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
