Coker Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Coker University softball team split Saturday's (Mar. 7) doubleheader at the Newberry College Wolves, losing 8-7 and winning 3-2.

Game One

After Anna Gluhosky scored on an error in the top of the second inning, the Wolves rallied back to score six runs in the bottom of the third. However, the Cobras did not quit. Jessica McWhorter got one run back with an RBI single in the fourth inning. In the top of the sixth, Coker managed to tie the game thanks to run-scoring hits from Ava Jay, Asheley Meckely, and Lauren DeWitt.

In the top of the eighth, DeWitt singled through the right side to score Jay, giving Coker a 7-6 lead. Newberry responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, on their way to a 8-7 walk-off victory.

Game Two

After a tough loss in game one, the Cobras were looking to bounce back in game two. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Newberry took an early 1-0 lead by hitting a solo home run to left field.  The Cobras tied the game in the top of the fifth, thanks to a single by Jena Dewalt.

In the top of the sixth, Coker took the lead as Madison King and Jessica McWhorter came through with RBI hits, going into the bottom half of the sixth with a 3-1 advantage. Thanks to great pitching by Christine Carver and Hannah Fisher, the Cobras held on for the 3-2 victory. Carver struck out eight through 6.1 innings of work, with Fisher coming in to get the final two outs, earning the save.

The Cobras will be back in action on Tuesday (Mar. 10) as they travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on Limestone. First pitch is set for 2:00, with live coverage available at www.cokercobras.com.
