Two Oswell Homers Fuel Coker Sweep of Queens

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker University softball team swept Thursday's (Feb. 27) doubleheader against the Queens University Royals, winning 5-4 in game one and 4-1 in game two.

Game One

The Cobras were able to take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Lilli Otten singled to left center field to score Ashley Meckley. In the top of the fourth, the Royals took a 3-1 lead after a home-run from Grace Valchar. However, Coker started to rally back in the bottom half of the inning. Madison King singled to right field, and stole second to get a runner in scoring position for Lauren DeWitt. DeWitt brought King home on an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Queens entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a 4-2 lead. Jena Dewalt kicked off the inning with a solo home run, followed by a single from Hannah Goodman. Coach Travis McCall then elected to pinch-hit Kayla Oswell, with hopes of a walk-off homer to end the game. The freshman came through for the Cobras, launching a line drive down the left field line over the fence to propel Coker to their first conference victory. Christine Carver struck out seven through five innings of work, meanwhile Jordyn Goodman threw two scoreless frames to earn her second win of the season.

Game Two

After an emotional game one win, the Cobras carried that momentum into game two. Isabelle Mullen held the Royals scoreless into the third inning. In the bottom of the third, the Cobras took the lead when Bailey Douglas scored on a wild pitch. Anna Gluhosky scored the second run for the Cobras, bringing home Ava Jay on a sacrifice fly. Up next was Kayla Oswell, who hit the walk-off homer in game one. Oswell was able to launch another ball over the fence, as her two-run homer gave the Cobras a 4-0 lead at the end of the third inning.

Isabelle Mullen continued her dominance in the circle, as she only allowed one hit through five innings of work. Jordyn Goodman came in for the final six outs, as the Cobras cruised to a 4-1 victory to sweep the doubleheader against Queens.
