HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker University softball team swept Friday's (Feb. 21) doubleheader against the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons, pushing their win streak to eight in a row.

Game One

The Cobras were able to jump out to an early lead in the first inning when Kayla Oswell reached on an error, scoring Jena Dewalt. After the Fighting Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning, Coker responded in the bottom half of the inning as Madison King scored Oswell on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Lilli Otten doubled to right field to give the Cobras a 3-2 advantage.

Fairmont State tied the game up in the top of the seventh, but the Cobras walked it off in the bottom of the seventh when Jena Dewalt scored on a wild pitch, leading Coker to a thrilling 4-3 victory. Isabelle Mullen and Jordyn Goodman each pitched well in the circle, combining for 10 strikeouts.

Game Two

In game two, the Fighting Falcons led 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Cierra Chastain held the Cobras hitless through the first three frames. However, in the bottom of the fourth, Cierra Watts doubled to center field to score Makenzie Harmon, giving Coker their first run of the game. The following inning, Madison King stole third game, and scored courtesy of a throwing error to tie the game 2-2.

With the score tied in the bottom of the sixth, the Cobras took the lead on a triple to right center field by Jessica McWhorter. The lead grew to 4-2 after Watts reached on a throwing error that scored McWhorter. Hannah Fisher got the final three outs to fuel a 4-2 win for Coker, completing the doubleheader sweep. Christine Carver had another great start for the Cobras, pitching five innings while striking out five.
