Meckley Blasts Walk-Off Homer as Cobras Sweep Nationally-Ranked Bulldogs

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College softball picked up a big South Atlantic Conference sweep of #21 Wingate on Wednesday (Mar. 27) as the Cobras took down the Bulldogs 5-4 in game one before taking game two 7-2.

Game one would provide plenty of fireworks as the Cobras opened up to a two-run lead in the first inning after Allyson High doubled to score Maria Williamson and High scored later after Anna Gluhosky reached on an error. The Bulldogs would tie it up in the top of the second inning and eventually took a 4-2 lead later in the fifth. With the Cobras down to their final three outs and trailing by two Chloe Pelham stepped up and ripped a double down the right field line to score Madison King. With Pelham on second and one out it was up to Ashley Meckley to come up with a big hit. Meckley, just a freshman, come through with one of the biggest hits of the season as she walked it off with a laser over the left field fence to win it 5-4.

Isabelle Mullen got the no decision after getting the start and going 4.1 innings, giving up four hits and striking out four batters. Taylor Forehand picked up her fifth win of the season after coming on in relief and shut the Bulldogs down. Forehand would only give up a single hit in her 2.2 innings of work and struck out five batters in the process.

The Cobras were not interested in a close game the second time as they jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning thanks to RBIs by High and Brianna Strickland. Pelham managed to drive in another run on the day in the second as she singled to plate Mindy North before being driven in later by Williamson. High would add her second and third RBI in game two in the fourth as her double scored Meckley and North. In the fifth inning North singled to center to score Gluhosky and put the Cobras out in front by seven over the nationally-ranked Bulldogs. Wingate managed to score a pair of runs in the seventh but it would not be enough as the Cobras swept the league leaders 7-2.

Christine Carver added her sixth win in what was one of her best starts this season as she gave up just two hits and struck out seven in her five innings. Jordyn Goodman came on to pitch the final two innings as she gave up a pair of runs on three hits.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 30) when they travel to Carson-Newman for a rematch of last year's South Atlantic Conference Championship game starting at 1:00 PM.
