Cobras Advance to SAC Semifinals By Shutting Down Catawba

ANDERSON, S.C.- The Coker College softball team was a force to be reckoned with on Friday, April 27, in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals versus Catawba College. The Cobras started fast and the No. 7 seeded Lady Indians could not answer, with the Navy and Gold taking the game 7-0.

The No. 2 seeded Cobras (34-15) took to the bats early and ended strongly with them.

In the first, the Cobras plated four runners. Anna Gluhosky started the inning being hit by a pitch. Katelyn Chambers drew a walk to have two runners aboard. Maria Williamson scored Gluhosky on a RBI double to left center to put the first run in the books. Hannah Price stepped in and hit a two RBI double to right center, bringing Chambers and Williamson home. This caused a Catawba pitching change with no outs to her credit. Price advanced to third on a Makayla Shore groundout. Hannah Goodman singled to right field to allow Price to put the fourth run on the board.

Coker added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of Price's fourth homer of the and fifth RBI on the afternoon. Diane Servideo came in as a pinch hitter, singling up the middle. Williamson followed it up with a walk and Alex Alverson entering as a pinch runner. Price then hit a shot left center, bringing the final score to 7-0.

Christine Carver (17-6, 1.80 ERA) and Taylor Forehand (8-5, 2.53 ERA) combined to pitch a stellar shutout, allowing just five walks and four hits, while striking out 11 Catawba batters.

The Navy and Gold will resume play in the SAC Tournament Semifinals against the No. 6 seed Queens (N.C.) Royals. First pitch from the AU Softball Complex is scheduled for 2:30 P.M.
