Cobras Draw Even with Lions on Senior Day

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker College softball team split their Senior Day with the Mars Hill University Lions by dropping game one 7-2 and coming from behind to win game two 10-5.

Game One

Coker started out game one strong, but could not find runs after the first.

Anna Gluhosky drew a walk to open the game for the Cobras. Katelyn Chambers moved her over on a successful sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Maria Williamson made it count with a RBI single to score the speedy Gluhosky. The bases were loaded for Hannah Goodman after back-to-back walks from Allyson High and Hannah Price. Goodman reached on a fielder's choice to third bases, bringing Williamson home.

The Lions scored three runs in the third, two in the fourth, and two in the sixth to take game one, 7-2.

Nikki Linthicum (7-2, 4.64) took her second loss of the season in four innings pitched, giving up four earned runs, seven hits, one walk, and one strikeout.

Game Two

The Navy and Gold came back to find victory, spurred on by two home runs from Makayla Shore.

Coker entered the bottom half of the fourth down 5-0. Shore took a pitch and drove it to left center field to give the Cobras a run.

A lead change came in the bottom of the fifth for the Navy and Gold. Alex Alverson started the inning off with a double down the left field line. High reached after being hit by a pitch, with Rebekah Addison entering to pinch run. Mindy North also doubled down the left field, scoring Addison and Alverson. Shore stepped in a hit a two-run shot to left center to tie the contest. After a pitching change, Brianna Strickland was hit by an errant pitch to put her on first and moved to second on a wild pitch. Lilli Otten went to bat as a pinch hitter and drew a walk. Gluhosky drove in Strickland on a single up the middle. After Courtney Boan reentered for Otten, Alverson singled up the middle, advancing to second on the throw, sending Boan home.

The win was sealed in the sixth when three runs scored for Coker. High led off with a double down the left field line and scampered to third on a wild pitch. Price earned a walk to put runners on the corners. Madison King pinch ran for Price and stole second. North hit a single to left field and advanced to second on the throw, allowing High to cross home plate. Shore added another RBI on the day with a sacrifice fly to left field, plating King. With a deep sacrifice pop up to the shortstop by Strickland, North beat out the throw to home for the 10th run on the board for the Cobras.

Christine Carver (14-6, 1.99 ERA) found her way onto the mound in relief and picked up the win. In four innings, she gave up only one hit with five strikeouts.

The Navy and Gold host one more conference series at Saleeby-Stokes Field. Coker and Catawba will battle it out on Tuesday, April 17, with games slated for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
