HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker College softball team took to the field against South Atlantic Conference foe No. 19 Queens University of Charlotte Royals in a midweek series. The teams split the doubleheader with the Royals winning game one 8-3 and the Cobras claiming game two 2-0.
Game One
The Royals got off to a fast start in the second inning, bringing home six runners.
The Cobras got two of their runs on the board in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run crushed to center field by Maria Williamson, scoring Anna Gluhosky. Gluhosky reached base on a walk and ended up at second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Alex Alverson.
Queens (N.C.) drove in two more runs through the fourth and five innings to bring their total to eight.
Mindy North started the scoring drive in the sixth by reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing on a wild pitch. Gluhosky once again drew a walk with Courtney Boan stepping in the box. Boan singled to center field, advancing to second on the throw, while Gluhosky made it to third, and North scoring on an error by the center fielder.
Nikki Linthicum had a solid outing in relief, pitching 5.2 innings while giving up two earned runs, five hits, walking four, and striking out five batters.
Game Two
In what turned out to be a pitching duel, the Cobras went the distance and earned the 2-0 victory.
The eventual winning run came in the second inning. Mindy North reached on a fielder's choice and Makayla Shore singled to the first baseman to put two runners on for Addison. In her first hit of the season, Addison hit a beauty to right field, allowing North to score for the first run of the game.
To seal the victory, the third inning saw Madison King single up the middle, steal second, and reach third on a throwing error by the catcher. The next batter in Williamson hit a sacrifice to center field, giving King enough time to cross the plate.
Taylor Forehand got the nod to start game two and pitched a stellar performance. In the complete game shutout, she only allowed four hits and one walk, alongside two strikeouts.
The Navy and Gold stay home for another conference matchup, hosting the Carson-Newman Eagles on Saturday, April 7. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
