HARTSVILLE, S.C.- Coker softball took the field for the second straight day as the host of the Cobra Invitational. The Navy and Gold cruised by Alderson Broaddus, 10-0, and battled with Mount Olive, coming out victorious, 3-1.

Game One

Coker was designated at the visiting squad for their game versus the Battlers. Runs came flooding in starting in the top of the second. Anna Gluhosky started the inning drawing a walk, with Hannah Goodman moving her over to second on a groundout to the shortstop. Brianna Strickland, the pitcher, drilled a double down the left field line for a RBI with Gluhosky coming home. Kelsi Bachmann and Cacey Simmons earned back-to-back walks to load the bases for Maria Williamson. She then singled to center field, scoring Bachmann and Strickland. Lilli Otten sent a sacrifice fly to left field, letting Simmons trot home. Hannah Price came to the plate and doubled to left center. Makayla Shore singled up the middle, allowing Williamson and Price to hustle home.

In the top of the third with a 6-0 lead, Strickland was struck by a pitch and Bachmann followed with a single. Williamson hit a single to center field, plating Strickland and moving Bachmann to second. Otten got a hit to load the bases for the second inning in a row. Price hit a hard ball to center, which gave Bachmann enough time to earn a run on the sacrifice fly.

The Cobras added two more runs to their total in the fourth inning. Madison King and Alex Alverson came in to pinch hit, reaching on a fielder's choices, and moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Williamson doubled just inside the left field line sending them home to add two more RBI to her season total of 20.

Strickland pitched a shutout in five innings of work, giving up only two hits and a walk.

Game Two

Mount Olive started out the game strong with a triple to center field, scoring on a sacrifice fly by the next batter.

Simmons blasted a solo home run to right center field, her first of the year, to get the Cobras on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Shore notched another solo home run for Coker, the second of her career, in the fourth. This run proved to be the difference maker. Price singled in an insurance run, with Bachmann crossing home.

Christine Carver (5-0) was the pitcher of record with six innings under her belt. She relented three hits, one earned run, and three walks. Nikki Linthicum collected her first save of the season, pitching an inning with one hit and a strikeout.

The Navy and Gold will return to action at Claflin on Tuesday (Feb. 20) for their rescheduled games from earlier in the season. First pitch against the Panthers will be thrown in Orangeburg at 1:00 p.m.
