Cobras Sweep Mars Hill to Close Regular Season

CANDLER, N.C. – The Coker College softball team finished off the regular season in style on Saturday (Apr. 22), picking up a pair of South Atlantic Conference wins over the Mars Hill University Lions. The Cobras won game one by a score of 7-3, then won game two 3-2.

In the opener, Coker used a four-run second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Back-to-back base hits by Mindy North and Augusta Jackson highlighted the breakout inning. Mars Hill responded with runs in the second and third innings to close the deficit to 4-2. After stealing third, North scored on a throwing error in the fourth inning to push the Coker lead to 5-2. The Lions added another in the sixth to make it 5-3, however a Maria Williamson home run and an RBI base hit by North gave the Cobras a pair of insurance runs and the eventual 7-3 win.

North and Tayler Barcomb led the way for the Cobras, going 3-for-4. Both scored two runs, while North plated two RBI. Augusta Jackson also plated two RBI, going 1-for-2 at t he plate.

Taylor Forehand picked up her eleventh win of the season, allowing just one earned run on five hits in five innings.

In game two, back-to-back base hits by Barcomb and Lilli Otten put the Cobras on the board in the top of the fourth inning. A Mars Hill home run put the Lions on top by a score of 2-1 going into the fifth inning. Coker responded with two runs of its own in the fifth inning, thanks to back-to-back base hits by North and Hannah Price. The Cobras would hold the Lions at bay in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to score the 3-2 win in the regular season finale.

Otten and Price led the way, going 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Forehand picked up her twelfth win of the season in game two. She allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings of relief.

The Cobras clinched the No. 4 seed in the SAC Tournament, which begins on Thursday (Apr. 27) at Byerly Park in Hartsville, S.C.
