Cobras Rally to Split Twinbill Against Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – The Coker College softball team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 9) in a South Atlantic Conference road doubleheader against Carson-Newman University. The Cobras dropped game one 10-1 in five innings, then came back to win game two by a score of 5-3. 

In the opening game, the teams exchanged runs in the opening two innings, leaving the game tied at 1-1 going into the third. After a scoreless inning and half, the Eagles ignited for nine runs in the fourth and fifth inning, to take the eventual 10-1 win.

Tayler Barcomb and Hannah Price led the way. Both went 1-for-2, with Barcomb scoring the lone run.

Tabitha Allen was hit with the loss. She gave up five runs on nine hits in four innings of work.

In game two, the Cobras struck first with a run in the top of the third inning. After a single by Riley Morris and a sac bunt by Katelyn Chambers, Maria Williamson stepped to the dish and laced a double into right field, scoring Morris. Coker plated two more runs in the fourth inning, thanks to two-RBI double by Morris scored Price and Breana Ard, giving Coker a 3-0 lead. After a scoreless fifth inning, the Coker offense kept churning, as Price led off the sixth inning with a double. After another sac bunt by Taylor Brown, Ard knocked a double into center field, scoring Price and giving Coker a 4-0 lead. The Cobras added one more insurance run, thanks to an Ashley Gallman RBI double, which scored Barcomb all the way from first. The Eagles would not go down quietly, scoring three runs in the seventh inning, but it would not be enough as Coker picked up the 5-3 win in game two.

Morris and Gallman each finished 3-for-4. Morris had a double, triple, one run and two RBIs. Gallman had a double and one run scored. Price went 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored, while Makayla Shore, Williamson and North all notched one hit.

Taylor Forehand picked up the win. She scattered seven hits and two earned runs in six and a third innings.

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Apr. 13) when they travel to Lenoir-Rhyne University for a SAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
