Cobras Fall on Final Day of 2016 Captain D’s Surf and Turf Classic

DAHLONEGA, GA. – The Coker College softball team dropped both games on the final day of the 2016 Captain D's Surf and Turf Classic. In game one, the Cobras lost to the University of Virginia-Wise Cavaliers by a score of 5-2. In game two, Coker fell to the No. 13 nationally-ranked University of North Georgia Nighthawks 1-0 in nine innings.

In the opening game, UVA-Wise struck first by plating three runs in the top of the first inning. The Cobras responded with runs in the second and fourth inning, thanks to RBIs by Maria Williamson in both innings. The Cavs plated two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning, securing the eventual 5-2 win.

Williamson finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Tayler Barcomb went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Riley Morris and Allyson High went 1-for-3 to round things out for the Navy and Gold.

Tabitha Allen was hit with the loss. She scattered three runs on five hits in six innings.

Game two featured a pitchers duel, with neither team plating a run through the first eight innings. The best opportunity for the Cobras came in the top of the sixth inning when Morris and Ashley Gallman both slashed two-out singles. However, Coker could not convert with a runner in scoring position. It was the Nighthawks that finally struck in the bottom of the ninth, recording three hits and the plating the game-winning run on a double to left field to win 1-0.

Morris went 2-for-4 in the latter game, with Gallman going 1-for-4 to round out the Cobras offensively.

Taylor Forehand was hit with the loss. She scattered one run on seven hits in eight innings.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 12), when they travel to Limestone to take on the Saints in non-conference doubleheader.
