Cobras Sweep Warriors to Remain Undefeated

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team (7-0-1) earned a pair of wins over the visiting Southern Wesleyan University Warriors on Saturday (Feb. 13) in a non-conference doubleheader. The Cobras earned a win in game one 6-1, then turned around to take game two 16-6. 

In game one, the Cobras struck first in the bottom of the third inning, after a Tayler Barcomb single scored Ashley Gallman and a Riley Morris sac fly plated Mindy North put Coker ahead 2-0. The Warriors responded with a run of their own in the top of the fourth to make the score 2-1. After a pair of scoreless half innings, North singled to start the bottom of the fifth inning. Morris stepped to the plate with one out and belted a two-run home run over the center field fence to give Coker a 4-1 lead. Makayla Shore and Barcomb recorded a pair of insurance runs, giving the Navy and Gold the 6-1 win in the opener.

North, Gallman and Barcomb all earned multi-hit games, with Barcomb also plating two RBIs. Morris also earned two RBIs, while Shore went 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Augusta Jackson (2-0) earned the win in game one, scattering six hits and one run in five innings of work, while striking out three.

In game two, SWU plated two runs in the top of the first inning. The Cobras responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a pair of RBI singles and a pair of RBI singles. After the Warriors responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a 5-4 lead, Coker batted around in the bottom half of the inning, scoring nine runs. After the teams traded runs in the third inning, the Cobras plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to secure the 16-6 win.

Maria Williamson finished game two 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two doubles and four RBIs. North and Barcomb each plated three RBIs, North going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Barcomb went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Katelyn Chambers finished game two going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Morris, Carley Bailey and Hannah Price all plated an RBI apiece, as well.

Tabitha Allen (3-0) picked up the win, scattering nine hits and five runs in four innings of work.

The Cobras will be back in action on Thursday (Feb. 18), when they take on the visiting USC Aiken Pacers in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 and 3 p.m.
