Cobras Ignite Offensively In Season-Opening Sweep of St. Andrews

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team opened its 2016 season with a pair of convincing wins over the visiting St. Andrews University Knights on Saturday (Feb. 6) afternoon. In game one of the non-conference doubleheader, the Cobras picked up an 8-0 win in six innings. Game two would be much of the same, with Coker earning a 14-2 win in five innings.

In the opening game, Katelyn Chambers had quite the impact in her collegiate debut. She went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. Tayler Barcomb finished 1-for-3, plating three RBIs and scoring one run. Also in her debut, Maria Williamson went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ashley Gallman, Carley Bailey and Riley Morris also notched RBIs to round things out offensively.

In the circle, Tabitha Allen (1-0) was spectacular. The junior right-hander threw a complete game three-hit shutout, while striking out three.

Game two was much of the same for the Navy and Gold, belting 17 hits in the 14-2 win. Barcomb made her presence felt once again, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Bailey and Morris recorded three-hit games in game two. Bailey went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored, while Morris finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Not to be outdone, Williamson followed up her debut with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate with three RBIs and one run scored in game two. Gallman also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored, while the trio of Carylann Geddes, Breana Ard and Makayla Shore all went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

In her Coker debut, Taylor Forehand (1-0) allowed two runs on two hits, while striking out six in a complete game effort.

The Cobras (2-0) will have a quick turnaround, as they will be back in action Sunday (Feb. 7) to take on the visiting Converse College Valkyries in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 1:30 p.m., with game two slated for a 3:30 start.
