Coker Set to Take On Columbia in Home Opener

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker softball team will host the Fighting Koalas of Columbia College in a nonconference double header to start their 2014 home opener on Sunday (Feb. 16). 

The Cobras are 4-3 to start the year with their most recent competition being a tough 1-0 loss to Lander.  Tayler Barcomb and Ashlee Ellen have been the offensive catalysts so far this season as they are both batting .455.  Ellen leads the team with four homeruns on the year as well as 10 RBI and seven runs scored.  Barcomb is close behind with two homeruns of her own and is second on the team with five RBI and six runs scored. 
Defensively the Cobras are led by right-hander Lauren Phillips (2-2).  In 19 innings pitched, the senior has an ERA of 2.58 along with seven strikeouts.    

On the mound Columbia is led by the right-hander Erin Walker.  In her last outing Walker recorded 14 strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Offensively, the Fighting Koalas are led by Kelsey Pruitt who led Columbia at the plate by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in a 6-1 win over William Peace. 

Game number one will be played at 1:00 p.m., followed by game two at 3:00 p.m.  Tickets for the game can be purchased at the gate for $5 dollars for adults, $3 dollars for students, and are free to all Coker students, faculty, and staff.
