Cobras Top King; Fall to Crusaders

BURLINGTON, N.C. –  The Coker softball team trumped the No. 1 seeded King 1-0 in a 12 inning game on Saturday (Apr. 20) in the Conference Carolinas championship tournament.  The Celebration however was short lived, as the Cobras fell 9-0 the following game to North Greenville. 

Game one of the day featured a pitching battle, as neither team could collect a run in the first seven innings. 

In the top of the 12th, with one out and nobody on junior outfielder Sydney Weatherford connected on a pitch down the leftfield line for a double.  Senior Jaclin Poole then stepped up to the plate and drove a pitch up the middle to send in Weatherford for the go a head 1-0 run.

Breanna Skipper would be dubbed with the win to improve to 10-4 on the year.  Skipper completed 12-innings of work, sitting down 12 batters and giving up no runs. 

Game two was a struggle for the Cobras, as the Crusaders jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead within the first three innings.  North Greenville would then tack on six more runs in the top of the sixth to take control of the game 9-0. 

Lauren Phillips (13-10) would be marked with the loss, after giving up 10 hits and seven runs during five innings pitched. 

Coker will move on to play the winner between Mount Olive and King on Sunday (Apr. 21).  The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
