Cobras Tame Bearcats With Series Sweep

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker softball team captured a two game series against Lander University on Wednesday (Mar. 27).  With the win the Cobras improve to 20-12 on the year. 

With the score tied at 3-3, and one out and one on Stacy Burr stepped to the plate.  Burr then connected on a pitch and sent it into left center to drive in Sydney Weatherford all the way from first base to earn the walk-off and preserve a 4-3 win. 

Lauren Phillips would earn the win on the mound improving her record to 9-6 on the season.  Phillips pitched a complete game, only giving up three runs on 10 hits and striking out four batters.

Both team were able to score a run in the opening inning of game two to tie the score at 1-1.  The Bearcats would go on to score two more runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cobra offense came alive as they drove in four runs on five hits.  Coker went on to take a 5-3 lead, with just three innings left. 

Lander would score again in the top of the sixth to close the gap to one, but Coker's defense would shut out the Bearcats in the top of the seventh to secure the 5-4 game two win.

Breanna Skipper would be credited with the win after pitching 6.2 innings.  Skipper allowed just four runs on seven hits, and struck out four batters.

Coker's next game will come at home on Thursday (Apr. 4) against Anderson in a non-conference competition.  Game one is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start time followed by game two at 3:00 p.m.
