Cobras Trump Royals With Series Sweep

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker softball team completed their third Conference Carolinas sweep of the season on Sunday (Mar. 10), when they defeated Queens University of Charlotte in a double-header.  With the win the Cobras extend their streak to eight, and improve to 12-4 on the year and 6-0 in league play.

In game one Coker took a 1-0 advantage after the bases were loaded and Stacy Burr was hit by a pitch.  Coker then went on to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Sydney Weatherford homered to drive in two more runs.

Queens would answer with two runs in the top of the sixth, but it wouldn't be enough as Coker capture game one with a score of 3-2.

Lauren Phillips would earn the win after pitching a complete game.  Phillips gave up six hits, and struck out two batters.

Coker jumped on top 3-0 at the start of game two in the bottom of the second when Breanna Skipper, Sarah Rountree, and Clarissa Suttle all singled to drive in RBIs.  However, Queens responded in the top of the fourth after Megan Lathbury double to left-center field to drive in three runs and tie the game at 3-3.

In the bottom of the fifth Rountree reached first base safety thanks to an error from the Queens shortstop.  Rountree was then able to steal second, and reach third after a sacrifice bunt from Suttle.  Weatherford then stepped up to the plate and drove in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle.  Two more RBIs from Burr, and Logan Cox allowed Coker to take a comfortable 6-3 lead heading into the top of the sixth.

Coker's defense would then take care of the rest, retiring six straight batters in the sixth and seventh innings.  The Cobras would preserve the 6-3 win and earned the 2-0 series sweep.

Skipper would earn the win on the hill after pitching seven innings, only allowing three hits and striking out four batters.  Skipper improves to 5-1 on the year.

The Cobras will be back in action this Monday (Mar. 11), when they host Catawba in a double-header series.  Game time is scheduled for 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
