Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened up their home season with a doubleheader sweep over the Cobras of Coker College Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won by scores of 6-0 and 5-1 to improve to 4-0 on the season. Coker falls to 1-3.

Game One: Eight different Bulldogs collected a hit while sophomore pitcher Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) went the distance, allowing only four hits while striking out nine.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the first when junior outfielder LaRonda McClain (Kings Mountain, N.C.) scored on an RBI single by senior catcher Jamie Millen (Monroe, N.C.).

Wingate added to its lead in the second senior outfielder Heather Winchester (Waxhaw, N.C.) scored on an RBI single from junior infielder Julie Broyer (Hollister, Calif.) to make it 2-0.

The Bulldogs opened up its lead in the fifth, starting with an RBI double from junior first baseman Leyila Myers (Marietta, Ga.). Sophomore designated player Emily Chavis (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) then delivered a two-run triple to right center to give Wingate a five-run lead. Freshman outfielder Jessica Bowen (Matthews, N.C.) finished off the scoring with an RBI single to plate Chavis and make it 6-0.

Smith improved to 2-0 on the season. The Cobras left 11 runners on base in the first game, while the Wingate defense recorded a pair of double plays to keep the shutout intact. Senior Shelly Catlett (Orangeburg, S.C.) took the loss for Coker. She allowed five earned runs on seven hits in five innings of work. She struck out four and walked two. Sophomore outfielder Haleigh Rogers (Ward, S.C.) and junior shortstop Brittany Owens (Johnsonville, S.C.) each recorded a double to lead the Coker offense.

Game Two: Sophomore Brittany Blankenship (Midlothian, Va.) went the distance, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out five to pick up her second win of the year. Four different Bulldogs picked up two hits each, led by Bowen who was two-for-three with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored.

The Cobras wasted no time getting on the board, with sophomore outfielder Whitney Wallett (Shermans Dale, Pa.) taking the first pitch of the game over the right field fence for a solo home run.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the third when McClain scored on a sacrifice bunt by Myers.

Wingate would take the lead in the fourth inning. Chavis led off the inning with a single, followed by an RBI triple from Bowen down the right field line to make it 2-1. Two batters later, senior outfielder Heather Winchester (Waxhaw, N.C.) laced a double to right center field to plate Bowen. She would score on an RBI single from McClain to make it 4-1.

The Bulldogs added one more insurance run in the sixth when Bowen scored on an RBI triple from Broyer.

Sophomore Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, Ill.) took the loss for the Cobras, allowing three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work. She struck out two and walked one.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, hosting Belmont Abbey at 1 p.m. Coker will host St. Augustine Saturday at 1 p.m.
