Hartsville, SC- In a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference softball match-up Coker defeated the Knights of St. Andrews Presbyterian College 8-7 in eight innings in game one and then lost 3-2 in game two. Coker is now 24-8 overall and 7-3 in the CVAC, while St. Andrews is 7-23 overall, and 3-9 in the CVAC.

 

In game one, it took extra innings to decide a winner, with St. Andrews storming back into the game in the seventh inning when Sam Stewart blasted a three run home run, her second of the day, to tie the game at five.

 

In the eighth it was more homers for the Knights as Danyell Marquez belted her second of the game, a two run shot, giving the Knights a two run lead. But, Coker would not be held down, as Miranda Klees, Ashton Williamson and Allie Bragg all had RBIs and the Cobras took home the 8-7 victory.

 

Somer Bigham (17-6) earned the win throwing a complete game allowing seven runs on eight hits with seven strike outs.

 

Stewart took the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits with four strike outs.

 

Leading the Cobras at the plate were Jessica Blackwell, Anna Lucas and Katie McCauley. Blackwell was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Lucas was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI and McCauley was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

 

Stewart and Marquez had the big bats for St. Andrews. Each had three hits, with two home runs, while Stewart had four RBIs and Marquez had three.

 

Game two saw Coker jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, but that would be all the runs the Cobras would manage, as St. Andrews again turned it on at the end of the game scoring three runs in the sixth to take home the victory.

 

Shelly Catlett (7-2) took the loss, going all seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strike outs.

 

Lauren James earned the win, allowing just two runs on 11 hits.

 

Kimberly Atkinson was 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Coker, while Williamson and Lucas were each 2-for-4.

 

Devane Rushing was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored for the Knights, while Marquez, Mika Tanji and Brianna Shurtleff were each 1-for-3.

 

Coker will now take a break before they return to the field on Saturday, March 24, at Mount Olive.
