Hartsville, SC- Coker split their non-conference double-header with Fairmont State today in collegiate softball. The Falcons of Fairmont won the first game 5-2, while the Cobras won game two 4-3. Coker is now 19-7 overall, while Fairmont State is 6-5 overall.

In game one, it was a pitching duel through the first four innings, with Fairmont State only leading 1-0. The Falcons broke things open just an inning later scoring three runs on two hits and a Coker error. The Cobras answered with two runs of their own, on four hits.

The Falcons tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, and held on through the seventh for the 5-2 win.

Heather Shutler earned the win for Fairmont, allowing two runs on four hits, with four strike outs in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Somer Bigham (14-6) took the loss, going all seven innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with eight strike outs.

Leading hitters for Fairmont State were Whitnie Highland and Erin Haddox, with Highland going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Haddox going 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

For Coker, Eunice Nettles, Kimberly Atkinson and Anna Lucas were each 1-for-3, with Nettles also driving in a run.

Game two, started out much like game one, except this time it was Coker jumping on the board early in the first with a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until Fairmont State tied it at one in the fourth, and then took the lead 2-1 in the fifth. The Cobras evened things up in their half of the fifth, before the Falcons added their third run in the top of the sixth.

Down a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, Jessica Blackwell laced a double down the right field line to score Whitney Watts and tie the game at three, and then Jamie Horton drove home Blackwell with a single to left to give Coker the lead, 4-3.

Shelley Catlett (5-1) got into a little trouble in the seventh, before holding on for the win. She tossed a complete game allowing three runs on nine hits with six strike outs.

Shutler took the loss, coming on in relief for the last inning and two thirds, allowing two runs on four hits.

Miranda Klees and Jamie Horton each had two hits for the Cobras, with Klees collecting two RBIs and Horton driving in one.

For Fairmont, Brooke Keene, Kristy Rausch, and Tara Lewis each had two hits, with Keene driving in two runs and Lewis driving in one run.

The Cobras return to the field tomorrow, as they host Glenville State at 2:00 p.m.
