Hartsville, SC- The Coker College Softball Team split their non conference double-header with Newberry College on Monday afternoon, winning the first game 4-3, while dropping the second game 8-1. Coker is now 5-2 on the season, while Newberry is 2-5-1.

 

Game one was a fast paced pitcher’s duel that took only an hour and a half to complete. Both teams remained deadlocked at 0-0 until the fourth inning when Newberry broke the scoring open with a Sara Powell two run homerun over the left field wall.

 

Coker got on the board in the fifth on a Eunice Nettles solo homer, just inside the left field foul pole. Then in the sixth the Cobras took the lead. It started when Jamie Horton pinch ran for Katie McCauley and then made her way to third thanks to back to back singles from Allie Bragg and Miranda Klees. Horton then scored the tying run on a past ball. Then with the bases loaded Jessica Blackwell gave Coker the lead when she smashed an RBI single through the left side.

 

Somer Bigham (4-2) took care of the rest shutting down the Indians and earning the win. She tossed a complete game six hitter, allowing two runs, while striking out five.

 

Christina Kirby took the loss for Newberry, allowing three runs on seven hits.

 

Coker was led by Blackwell and Nettles. Blackwell was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Nettles was 1-for-3 with a homerun, an RBI and a run scored.

 

Newberry’s Powell was 1-for-3 with a homerun, two RBIs and a run scored, while Ginna Dean was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

 

In game two, things got started early as each team scored a run in the first, but then the scoring came to a screeching halt, as neither team plated a run for the next four innings.

 

It wasn’t until the top of the sixth when Newberry scored five runs on two hits and two costly Coker errors, that anyone crossed the plate. Then in the seventh the Indians added a couple of insurance runs to seal the 8-1 victory.

 

Bigham (4-2) took the loss going six innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, while striking out two.

 

Stephanie Monette got the complete game win, allowing just one run on seven hits.

 

Anna Lucas was the only Cobras to collect multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3.

 

Newberry’s Courtney Lindler was the player of the game, going 2-for-5 with two doubles, five RBIs, and a run scored, while Powell finished 1-for-3 with a three RBIs.

 

Coker returns to action on Sunday, as they host Claflin University in another non-conference double-header starting at 2:00 p.m.
