Cabral Breaks Coker Career Kills Record in Sweep Against Alderson Broaddus

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Artur Cabral shattered the Coker men's volleyball career kills record and led the Cobras to a dominating 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-22) sweep Friday (Mar. 24) evening over the Alderson Broaddus Battlers. Luke Hansen, who totaled 851 kills during his Coker career, held the previous record. Cabral has set the new Coker career kills record with an impressive 852 kills.

During the first set of action against Alderson Broaddus, the Cobras trailed 13-15 until four consecutive points gave Coker a 16-15 advantage. The four-point scoring streak was developed by two kills from Artur Cabral and a service ace by Joao Victor Santos. Next, the Navy and Gold steadily built their lead until a service error committed by the Battlers gave the Cobras the 25-18 first set victory.

In the second set, Coker pulled away from Alderson Broaddus and held a dominating 24-13 lead. Gabriel Castro would add the deciding point of the set with a well-placed kill. Trailing two sets to none, Alderson Broaddus battled and made the third and final set competitive. Both squads were notched up 22-22 until the Cobras finished the set strong by tallying the final three points of the frame. The three point-scoring streak was highlighted by a powerful kill from Joao Victor Santos.

Offensively, the Cobras were led by Artur Cabral and Joao Victor Santos who each laid down a team-best 11 kills. In addition, Cabral finished with a .350 kill percentage, while Santos accumulated a .400 kill percentage. On the defensive end of the ball, Cabral and Santos also gave the Navy and Gold standout performances by leading the team in digs (Santos, eight) and total blocks (Cabral, three).

The Cobras will be back in action when they travel to Erskine on Tuesday (Mar. 28.). First serve is set for 7 p.m.
