Cobras Edge Battlers in Five Sets

PHILIPPI, WV – The Coker College men's volleyball team edged the Alderson Broaddus Battlers 3-2 (29-27, 25-20, 23-25, 21-25, 15-13) Saturday (Feb. 11) evening in a back and forth contest for their fourth-straight victory.

The Cobras gained the early advantage in the match and looked to be in control by capturing the first two sets. However, Alderson Broaddus battled back by edging Coker in the next two sets and tied the match score at 2-2.

The fifth and final set of the match had the Cobras and Battlers exchange blows until the set score was tied at 12 a piece. Next, two kills from Joao Victor Santos and an attack error committed by Alderson Broaddus sealed the match victory for Coker.

Offensively, the Navy and Gold had a stand out performance from Joao Victor Santos who belted an impressive 26 kills, the second highest mark in program history. The program record was set last season by Santos with 27 kills during a single match. On the defensive end of the ball, Devion Whetstone played stout defense with six total blocks.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 18 when they travel to Emmanuel for a 3 p.m. match.
