Cobras Down Crusaders in Straight Sets

BELMONT, N.C. - The Coker men's volleyball team picked up its 2nd victory of the season with a 3-0 straight set win over the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Friday (Jan. 20) night.

The Cobras (2-0) took down the Crusaders with set scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-16.

The first set of play was a back and forth affair with the Cobras edging the Crusaders 25-23. Coker and Belmont Abbey were notched up at 13 apiece when the Cobras separated themselves from the Crusaders with three consecutive points. The Cobras would hold on to their lead for the first set victory.

During the second and third sets of the match, Coker downed Belmont Abbey with comfortable 25-17 and 25-16 victories. Five straight points during the second set gave the Cobras a 13-7 advantage over the Crusaders. Next, a kill from Joao Victor Santos solidified the 25-17 second set victory for Coker.

Finally, Coker sealed their match victory with a 25-16 third set win. Joao Victor Santos led the way offensively for Coker with 12 kills. Devion Whetstone contributed on the offensive end as well with eight kills and a team-high .778 kill percentage. 

Coker men's volleyball will have little time off as they will be back in action tomorrow (Jan. 21) afternoon when they travel to North Greenville to take on the Crusaders at 3 p.m.
