Nau Provides Clinching Match To Down Newberry 4-3

Hartsville, SC - Men's Tennis defeated Newberry in a 4-3 thriller this afternoon, putting themselves in control of their own destiny in a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) playoff push.

The day started off dominant for the Cobras, winning all three doubles matches in a sweep. Thibaut Decaluwe and Tom Lamers took the 6-3 win on court one, Samuel Winter and Bernardo Peralta took the dominant 6-0 bagel win on court two, while Joao Casas Moreira and Andy Huyhn partnered up to win 6-2 on court three.

In singles, things started off looking like a walk in the park for the Cobras. In two quick games, Casas (6-2, 6-2 on court five) and Winter (7-5, 6-0 on court three) were off the court with wins to give Coker the 3-0 advantage. All the sudden, momentum started to shift in favor of the Wolves. Matches ended on courts one, two, and four, and the Cobras suddenly found themselves even with Newberry with a 3-3 team score.

Enter, freshman Carlos Fernando Nau. After dropping the first set 3-6, Newberry was just one set away from claiming the comeback victory over the Cobras. However, that wasn't in the cards today, not if Nau had anything to say about it. A second-set battle ended with a 7-5 victory for Carlos and we were headed to a third set with everything to play for. With the win and a potential trip to the SAC Men's Tennis postseason on the line, Nau came through with a gritty 7-5 third set victory to claim the 4-3 victory for Coker.

Following this thriller, the Cobras will come back home for the last match of the regular season, hosting the Wasps of Emory & Henry in a senior day faceoff. First serve for that match will be at 2:00 PM.
