Cobras Sweep Day One of Citadel Tournament

SUMTER, S.C.- The Coker men's tennis team swept its matches over Spartanburg Methodist and USC Sumter on Friday (Feb. 10).

Coker defeated Spartanburg Methodist 9-0 and USC Sumter 8-1.

Against Spartanburg Methodist, Henrik Hellbe and Hunter Horton picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Mark Watt and Dominic Allan swept No. 2 doubles 8-0, with Felix Schweyer and Walker Long sweeping No. 3 doubles 8-0.

Watt picked up a 6-0, 6-2 straight sets win at No. 1 singles, while Hellbe gutted out a 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Horton completed a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 3 singles, while Schweyer followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Allan (No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0) and Long (No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0) also swept their oppoents in the first match.

Against USC Sumter, Coker was yet again able to sweep doubles play, starting with an 8-5 victory at No. 1 by Hellbe and Horton. Watt and Allan followed up with an 8-4 win at No. 2, before Schweyer and Long came up with the 8-1 win at No. 3.

Watt got his second sweep (6-3, 6-3) at No. 1 singles on the day, while Horton swept No. 2 6-1, 6-2. Schweyer won No. 4 in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Allan continued the trend and won at No. 5 in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). Long picked up his second sweep of the day at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-2 to finish the match.

The Cobras will take on The Citadel at 9:30 a.m. followed by Benedict at 1:30 p.m. at in day two of tournament play.
