Cobras Soar Past the Flying Fleet 7-2

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Coker men's tennis team continued its winning ways with a 7-2 victory over Erskine College on Saturday (Apr. 6) in Conference Carolinas action. With the win the regionally ranked No. 7 Cobras improved to 8-0 in conference play, and 13-4 overall.

The Cobras opened the match by taking two of three during doubles play. Tom Sizeland and William Marrafao were victorious at No. 2, 9-7, while James Corfield and Martin Moncayo breezed past their Flying Fleet competitors 8-1 at No. 3.

During singles action Corfield extended his singles match winning streak to 12 with a three-set come from behind victory at No. 4. He dropped the first set 6-4, but bounced back with a 7-5 win and a 6-2 win. Also picking up a three-set victory in singles play was Andre Staab at No. 1. Staab defeated his opponent 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Moncayo, Marrafao and George Handy each picked up wins as well. Moncayo won in straight sets at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0, while Marrafao lost just two sets at No. 3, winning 6-1, 6-1. Handy earned the final victory of the match at No. 5, 6-2, 6-3.

Coker will once again put its perfect conference record on the line on Sunday (Apr. 7) against Belmont Abbey. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Coker Tennis Courts.
