Cobras Win Battle with Saints, Stay Perfect in League Play

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Coker men's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 win over Limestone College on Saturday (Mar. 30) in a battled of undefeated Conference Carolinas teams. The Cobras remain undefeated in league play, improving to 7-0 and 11-4 overall.

The Cobras are now in first place in the conference standings; one of just two teams in the conference that is still undefeated. Mount Olive is the other team that is undefeated at 6-0. 

Coker opened the match by taking two of three from Limestone in doubles action. Tom Sizeland and Willaim Marrafao got the win at No. 2, 8-5 and James Corfield and Martin Moncayo picked up an 8-6 win at No. 3.

In singles play, the Cobras dropped a pair of barnburners at No. 1 and No. 2, as both matches went to three sets. Andre Staab fell at No. 1, 6-7 (7-3), 6-0, 7-6 (7-1). At No. 2 Sizeland took the first set 6-4, but lost the next two 6-1, 6-1. With the wins at No. 1 and No. 2 the Saints took the 3-2 lead over the Cobras with four matches left.

Marrafao tied the match three with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3, and Corfield put the Cobras ahead win a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4. George Handy dropped his match at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2, tying the match at four with one match remaining. In the final match of the day, Moncayo was victorious at No. 6, with scores of 6-3, 6-2, giving the Cobras the 5-4 overall win. 

The Cobras will take their talents on the road for their next match at Shaw University on Wednesday (April 3). The match is set to begin at 3 p.m.
