Cobras Take Down Wolves 5-4

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker men's tennis team pulled out a narrow 5-4 win over the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday. The Cobras swept the doubles portion of the match and picked up a pair of wins in singles play to secure the win.

Leonardo Lima (Brazil) and Manel Estruga (Spain) won at No. 1 doubles with a score of 9-8 (7-2). James Corfield (New Zealand) and Guillermo Aylon (Spain) had a masterful come from behind win at No. 2 doubles. Trailing 5-2, the duo battled back to win 8-6. Finally, Billy Simpson (Hartsville, S.C.) and Ricardo Perez (Corpus Christi, Texas) earned an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Leading 3-0 after the doubles portion of the match, the Cobras needed just two singles victories to secure the overall win and they got them from Estruga and Aylon. Estruga's win came at No. 3 singles where he defeated his opponent 6-1 in the first set, only to have his opponent retire in the second. Aylon got he win at No. 4 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 straight set victory.

The Cobras will hit the road for their next two matches this weekend. On Saturday they will travel to King College for a 1 p.m. match and then on Sunday they will face Lees-McRae College at 2 p.m.
