BELMONT, N.C. – The Cobra men’s tennis team picked up their first win of the season thanks to a 7-2 victory over Belmont Abbey College in Conference Carolinas men’s tennis action on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Coker men to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The Cobras started the match with a pair of wins in doubles play, as Rick Vliegen (Landgraaf, Holland) and Evan Schreiner (Seneca, S.C.) picked up a 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Then Juan Vallejo-Gonzalez (Quito, Ecuador) and Ty Medlin (Seneca, S.C.) won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.

In singles play, Coker won in straight sets in four of their five victories, including senior Chad Austin (Kershaw, S.C.) earning this first collegiate tennis victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.

Technically, Coker could have won all nine matches, but without a sixth man the Cobras were forced to forfeit their No. 3 doubles match and their No. 6 singles match, giving the Abbey two victories.

Coker will take the courts again on Wednesday, when the Cobras host Pfeiffer University at 2:00 p.m.
