HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Cobra men’s tennis team dropped their third straight match of the season with a 9-0 loss to Newberry College in non-conference men’s tennis action on Friday afternoon. With the loss Coker drops to 0-3, while Newberry moves to 1-1 with the victory.

Coker’s best chance for a win in doubles came in the No. 3 doubles match with Fred Estep (Hartsville, S.C.) and Chad Austin (Kershaw, S.C.) losing by just three games, 8-5.

In the singles matches, Juan Vallejo-Gonzalez (Quito, Ecuador) lost at No. 1, 6-4, 6-0, while freshman Rick Vliegen (Landgraaf, Holland) battled back after a 6-0 loss in the first set to fall 6-4 in the second set at No. 3. Austin had another strong performance, losing at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-4.

Newberry’s Pavle Popovic and Christian Ranguelov were both perfect in their singles matches at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively, winning 6-0, 6-0.

The Cobra men return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 24 when they host USC-Aiken in another non-conference match starting at 2:00 p.m.
