Sumter, SC - The Coker Men’s and Women’s tennis teams finished up their season at the CVAC Championships this weekend by both finishing 8th.

The Coker Women’s team entered as number 7 seeds and first played second seeds Limestone College. Limestone looked good and went on to claim a 5-0 victory. The Lady Cobras next faced Mount Olive and fell 5-1 despite some good tennis. This led to a 7th/8th playoff versus Anderson. Coker came out good in doubles and led 2-1. Despite singles victories from Ashley Schaum and Jen Konopa, Anderson claimed a narrow 5-4 win to take 7th place.

After the withdrawal of Lees McRae, the Coker men entered the tournament and were unlucky not to place higher than 8th. They first went up against Barton College ranked 30th in the nation and fell 5-0. The Cobras next faced Pfeiffer University and were very unfortunate to lose 5-3. Coker had excellent wins from Matt Byford and Duncan Grew at 1 doubles and Tim Morton and Tyson Thompson at 2 doubles. Coker senior Byford played well at 2 singles and won 7/5 6/1 in his last college singles match. However, Pfeiffer claimed wins at 1, 3, 5 and 6 singles to claim the win. The men next played Queens for 7th/8th and fell 5-0 after Queens swept the doubles and won at 1 and 3 singles.

Anderson University defended as tournament champions on the men’s side after a 5-3 win over Barton College. Erskine College also defended their CVAC title on the women’s side by defeating Limestone in the championship.
