Thomasville, N.C. - Matt Byford of Coker College (4-2 overall, 4-1 CVAC) has been selected as the NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) men’s tennis Player of the Week. Byford led the Cobras to another 2-0 week with a pair of road victories at Belmont Abbey College and Queens University of Charlotte. Against the Crusaders, Byford pulled out a 7-5 first set win and then cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set. The junior from Essex, England dropped the first set 6-7 in his singles match at Queens but rebounded to win the match with 6-4 and 6-0 victories.
In doubles he teamed with countryman Duncan Grew to form a strong team. The duo is 4-2 on the year and were 8-4, 8-2 winners last week. Coker’s number one player in both singles and doubles has been on a roll that has coincided with the team’s 4-0 streak. Byford has not lost a match since February 19 and has high hopes of keeping his streak alive for the remainder of the season.
